Therapist and co-founder of Mental Health 4 Muslims
Hijri - Unknown-Present (AH); Common Era - Unknown-Present (CE)
Dr. Nafisa Sekandari is amazing and active clinical psychologist who speaks and writes regularly on various topics that affect Muslims from all different backgrounds. She is an exceptional therapist who runs her own private practice based out of California, and has also used her expertise to found the site Mental Health 4 Muslims. MH4M was founded in 2009 in order to educate the Muslim community about identifying, treating, and living with mental health issues. It is a powerful advocate for destigmatizing mental health care, and uses Islamic history and tradition to provide the culturally specific treatment that is needed by Muslims around the country. The innovative site connects patients to clinical providers, blog posts, and other community resources so that no Muslim has to face any emotional, mental, or physical hurdle alone. Dr. Sekandari has thus opened the mental health world to a diverse range of people in both her individual practice and online community. This work has made waves on the national level, and she has been honored by serving as an APA State Leadership Conference Diversity Delegate. In 2014, Dr. Sekandari was invited to the Annual White House Iftar Dinner, meeting President Barack Obama and representing her groundbreaking work in the Muslim community.
